Ryan SpoonVintage Footlocker Dunk Contest Video - Ken Griffey, Deion Sanders + Michael Conley

Terrific vintage Footlocker Dunk Contest video with people like Deion Sanders and Griffey dunking. ESPN’s Sports Guy provides the intro:

“Can you remember two freshman point guards coming in at the same time who were as good as D.J. Augustin and Mike Conley Jr.? I can’t believe I’m about to praise Billy Packer, but he made a great point near the end of the OSU-Wisconsin game — Conley was deferring to his teammates and ignoring the fact that he’s their best creator, so Packer pointed out, “Look, Conley’s the guy that needs to win this game for them” about two minutes before Conley’s game-winning drive in the final few seconds…

Speaking of Conley, do yourself a favor and check out this YouTube clip of his father (the Olympic gold medalist in the triple jump) lighting it up in a celebrity slam dunk contest — not just for Conley’s dunks (which were ridiculous, especially the last one) but the Junior Griffey/Deion Sanders dunks. Can’t ESPN Classic bump the 24-hour nonstop poker reruns and air the tape of this entire contest? Would that be too much to ask?”

  • Ryan Spoon2007 NFL Draft Combine - Highlights

The NFL Draft Combine is one of the most interesting sporting events of the year - and it’s really overlooked by mainstream media. While most of the attention it receives is regarding the meat-market atmosphere, the combine is a series of rigorous activities that helps pro scouts get any slight insight in potential draft picks (aka complete gambles)
The combine consists of a series of tests - some physical and some mental. From the 40 yard dash to the benchpress (max out 225lbs) to the wonderlic exam to complete physicals.

Here are some of the 2007 combine standouts:

    Calvin Johnson/WR/Georgia Tech
Johnson opted to run the 40-yard dash but not participate in the pass-catching workout. Not a big deal since he is already acknowledged as the best receiver in the draft. Yet his speed on Sunday amazed many as Johnson initially ran a swift 4.45, then clocked an even faster time of 4.38. He has secured his spot as the top prospect in this draft and made the Oakland Raiders decision a little more difficult. - SI.com

    Brady Quinn/QB/Notre Dame
Whether or not you think he’ll make it in the NFL - he proved he has the strength. 28 reps of 225lbs on the benchpress is stunning for a QB.

    Jason Hill/WR/Washington State
Washington State wide receiver Jason Hill ran the 40 between 4.35 and 4.38 seconds, times that are much faster than most expected as he was thought to be more of a 4.5-range guy. More importantly, Hill showed that he is fully recovered from an in-season ankle injury that slowed down his senior production. - Yahoo Sports

    JaMarcus Russell/QB/LSU
JaMarcus Russell raised some eyebrows when he chose to only weigh in (figured a workout can only hurt his stock). But he weighed in 10 pounds over his playing weight (at 267lbs).

Ryan SpoonTommy Morrison To Fight This Weekend - No Longer HIV Positive?

What a bizarre story. Former heavyweight ‘great’ (very questionable) Tommy Morrison lost about 10 years of his career to what he calls false positive HIV tests. Now, he also claims that he is HIV negative and West Virginia, which is one of the only states to sanction boxing matches without requiring blood tests, is allowing him in the ring.

So many questions at hand. If they really were false positive tests, why isn’t there a lawsuit (since he lost millions in the prime of his career)? If he really is HIV negative, why weren’t these tests taken far earlier? Who is boxing against Tommy?! Who is reffing?

And what do the users think? Well, according to ESPN, they are completely split:

Ryan SpoonPacman Jones Causes a Three Person Shootout in Vegas… Over Money and Strippers

This guy can’t escape trouble (see complete list below)… and this kind of stuff couldn’t happen anywhere but in Vegas with a professional athlete:

Titans cornerback Pacman Jones set off a melee that led to a triple shooting outside a Las Vegas strip club Monday, the club’s co-owner said, based on accounts he said he had from eyewitnesses. He said the melee broke out when Jones began throwing money into the air around strippers. When a security guard grabbed Jones, the player’s entourage jumped in. A woman with Jones then hit the guard over the head with a champagne bottle and Jones attacked the guard.
    – The Tennessean

    Pacman Jones’ Complete Controversy List

In October 2003, Jones was sentenced to one year in jail following a bar fight in Morgantown, WV where he and other West Virginia University football players allegedly beat another student with a pool cue, but the sentence was suspended and he was placed on two years probation.

On July 13, 2005 Jones was arrested on charges of assault and felony vandalism stemming from a nightclub altercation.

On September 5, 2005 Jones was a guest at the annual Nashville Sports Council Kickoff Luncheon. Later that evening, after a loud verbal tantrum when he was told to wait in line for his vehicle, Jones was counseled by the police. He also refused to pay for any valet services used that evening.

In October 2005, in a petition filed by the state of WV, it was alleged that Jones had not made regular and sufficient contact with his probation officer and that he did not report his July arrest in Nashville in a timely fashion.

The Judge granted the probation extension of 90 days, even though the state requested for it to be extended up to a year.

On August 25, 2006, Jones was arrested in Murfreesboro, Tennessee for disorderly conduct and public intoxication. He claimed a woman stole his wallet. She claimed that she did not steal anything and Jones spat on her. Police officers said they ordered Jones to leave several times, but he refused and continued to shout profanities at the woman. A judge granted him six months probation on the conditions that he stays out of further trouble and away from the nightclub[1]

On October 26, 2006. Jones was cited for misdemeanor assault for allegedly spitting in the face of a female student from Tennessee State University during a private party at Club Mystic, a Nashville nightclub. He was suspended by the Titans for one game and was scheduled to be booked on the charge on November 17, 2006.

During the NBA All-Star Game weekend in Las Vegas (Feb. 16-18, 2007), Jones went to a local strip club, and is alleged to have been involved in an altercation with a stripper. Accoriding to the club’s co-owner, Jones, there with an entourage of half a dozen people, “made it rain” several hundred one-dollar bills. Jones becamed enraged when one of the strippers began taking the money without his permission and slammed her head on the stage. A security guard intervened and scuffled with member’s of Jones’ crew. Jones threathened the guard’s life. Soon after order was restored, the club owner says a person in Jones entourage returned with and fired into the club hitting three people including the security guard, who survived with minor injuries. One of the people hit, however, has been paralyzed from the waist down. Jones maintains that he did not know the shooter.

    Dancing With The Stars 4

ABC just announced their cast for DWTS 4:

    • Billy Ray Cyrus
    • Shandi Finnessey (Miss USA 2004)
    • Vincent Pastore (”Big Pussy” from The Sopranos)
    • Laylah Ali
    • Leeza Gibbons
    • Paulina Porizkova
    • Ian Ziering
    • Joey Fatone
    • Apolo Anton Ohno
    • Clyde Drexler, and (drum roll please)…
    • Heather Mills

Personally, I can’t wait to see Big Pussy get winded after 5 minutes of warmups. I’m also wondering if Ms. Mills will be dancing to any Beatles classics–somehow I doubt it. She’s going to be the sentimental crowd favorite because of her prosthetic leg–however that doesnt mean she can dance. I need proof.

Another prediction: the athletic dominance established by Emmitt Smith and Jerry Rice will be abrutply terminated by the 6′7″ Clyde “The Glide” Drexler. Unless they put a hoop on the dance floor there’s no way he’s graceful enough to samba. Everyone thinks Apolo Anton Ohno is going to be the epitome of grace and power because of his ice skating background. I believe that if Apolo & friction could get along, he woulda ran track. Laylah will outlast them both and represent for the athletes. I predict she does at least one dance to Eric Clapton’s Layla.

Also I’m calling foul on Joey Fatone & Billy Ray Cyrus. Dancing was a part of their “real” jobs. That’s like having to play Jeopardy against Trebek himself. I would rather see Cyrus go against his daughter, Hannah Montana, and see who lasts longer.

People I would love to see on future seaons of DWTS:

    • Ken Jennings
    • someone from Ultimate Fighting (e.g. Randy Couture)
    • Mike Tyson
    • the blonde chick on Fox & Friends
    • Shaquille O’Neal
    • William “The Refrigerator” Perry
    • Bill O’Reilly
    • Jenna Jameson (with Bill-O maybe?)
    • Jeremy Piven
    • one of the kids from The Wire
    • the judge in the Anna Nicole Smith case (he’d love the attention)
    • one of the characters from King of Cars (Blue Genie?)
    • Lindsey Jacobellis (to see if she falls with 10 seconds left in her dance)
    • a winning couple from Beauty & The Geek
    • Madeleine Albright (my sleeper pick)

Ryan SpoonCharles Barkley Beats Dick Bavetta (Video) & We Cash In

The round mound proved the world wrong as he defated 3-to-1 favorite (at 67 years old by the way!) Dick Bavetta Saturday night in a rousing event. Of course, we posted about the event, the wager line, and why Chuck would win here:

Ryan SpoonAsante Samuel, Lance Briggs & Dwight Freeney All Franchised

As a Patriots fan, I am *very* relieved that Asante Samuel will be returning to Boston (and upset that Freeney couldn’t leave Indy!). But this is the new face of the NFL - with salaries and salary caps all rising faster than they have ever before - teams are going to have use the franchise tag as their primary way of retaining talent without paying astronomical amounts. And the athletes are already fuming - but as Peter King notes, 7.8mm for Samuel ain’t shabby.

From SI.com’s Peter King (always a good, insightful read):

    4. I think the Patriots had to franchise Asante Samuel, just as the Bears had to franchise Lance Briggs. Neither defense would be nearly the same without them, particularly New England’s. And spare me the bleating from Samuel and his agent about being forced to play for the franchise number, $7.8 million, next year. You get no sympathy from me for being “forced'’ to play with one of the five best cornerback salaries in football next fall.

    5. I think, by the way, the one rant that gets so old every year is the one from players about their hatred of the franchise tag. “They’ve got to get rid of it,'’ soon-to-be-franchised defensive end Dwight Freeney of the Colts told me a couple of days after the Super Bowl. “How can you be a free agent when the team doesn’t allow you to ever get to the market?'’
