Best TV Sitcom Sports Coaches - In Honor of Reggie Theus
5. Coach
Craig T. Nelson - Coach Hayden Fox
February 28, 1989 – May 14, 1997
Coach starred Craig T. Nelson as Hayden Fox, coach of the fictional Division I-A college football team, the Minnesota State University Screaming Eagles. The series also starred Jerry Van Dyke as Luther Van Dam, Bill Fagerbakke as Michael “Dauber” Daubinski, assistant coaches under Nelson’s character. Coach also wins extra credit for regular appearances by Rob Schneider.
Coach was a sturdy show - nothing spectacular but among coaching sitcoms, it does have the best staying power.

4. Just the 10 of Us
Bill Kirchenbauer - Coach Graham Lubbock
April 26, 1988 – July 27, 1990
A little remembered show that was a spin-off of Growing Pains, and was broadcast from 1988 until 1990. The series focuses on Graham Lubbock (Bill Kirchenbauer), a gym teacher at the high school that Growing Pains characters Mike and Carol Seaver (Kirk Cameron, Tracey Gold) had attended; and the father of eight children.
Six of Graham’s children were girls, four of them teen-agers. They were:
* Marie - the oldest, most responsible, and most pious.
* Cindy - twin to Wendy, the older of the two, and the most ditzy.
* Wendy - twin to Cindy, and the most flirtatious of the four.
* Connie - the Bohemian of the group.
His younger daughters were 8-year-old Sherry and infant Melissa.
Graham and Elizabeth’s sons were 11-year-old Graham Jr. and toddler Harvey.

3. Hang Time
Reggie Theus - Coach Bill Fuller
September 9, 1995 – December 6, 2000
Reggie Theus starred as the original coach on Hang Time - a show best known for its notorious cast changes and cheesy basketball action on a 30 foot long basketball court. The show originally started out with new transfer student Julie Connor trying out for the boys’ varsity basketball team, much to the dismay of fellow team captain Chris Atwater and head cheerleader Mary Beth Pepperton. The other players on the team were Danny Mellon, Earl Hatfield and Michael Maxwell. The first season also introduced Bill Fuller as he adjusts to his job as coach of the Deering Tornadoes and getting used to the enthusiastic team manager Samantha ‘Sam’ Morga
2. Hang Time
Dick Butkus - Coach Mike Katowinski
September 9, 1995 – December 6, 2000
When Reggie Theus left… he was succeeded by Coach Katowninski - played brilliantly by Dick Butkus. Butkus remains the WORST actor in the history of saturday morning television (not exactly a strong lineup for acting) - and for that, we love him.

1. Saved by the Bell
Coach Sonski
August 20, 1989 – May 22, 1993
Our top spot goes to Coach Sonski who guided AC Slater to wrestling and football victory. Coach Sonski was a brilliant motivator and gave us lines like this:
“Hey you worked on the full nelson and the half-nelson - why don’t you show her the Willie Nelson? That’s a country and wrestling joke, heh heh heh heh. [singing] I’ve got spurs that jingle jangle…
“I don’t care if I’m hated - I have pets at home who love me.”
“Ok, I’m sensitive to dames. I watch Oprah.”
