Shocked! Appalachian State put on quite the show in their 2007 debut with a monumental upset over #5 ranked Michigan at the Big House in Ann Harbor. Lloyd Carr’s hot seat just caught fire and Michigan lost virtually any shot at a National Championship as the Wolverines fell 34-32 to the Mountaineers of North Carolina. Appalachian State a division 1AA school appeared to be outmatched on paper, but it was David versus Goliath and once again David came through in flying colors. Michigan trailing 31-26 heading into the fourth quarter marched down the field and Sportswrap’s Heisman honorable mention Mike Hart, capped off a Heisman day with a 54 yard scamper to give Michigan the lead with 4:36 to play. Hart finished with 188 yards on 23 carries and 3 touchdowns. Michigan then intercepted the Mountaineers on the following possesion and it appeared to be that’s all she wrote. Michigan then had a field goal blocked and Appalachian State drove back down the field for what would be the game winning field goal, a 24 yarder by Julian Rauch with 26 seconds to go. Yet, Michigan still managed to get within field goal range, a 52 yarder that would eventually be blocked leaving the 110,000 Wolverine fans stunned.
