The baseball world has been turned upside down today when perennial American League favorite Tampa Bay Devil Rays shockingly decided to change their name to the Tampa Bay Rays!
With that drastic move, the Rays have changed their logo and released 6 variations - none of which are very engaging if you ask me. I was not a fan of the old jerseys and logos, but these new ones lack any excitement or deep color. The gray one is particularly bland. For your devilish enjoyment:

I think they stink, nothing wrong with dark green,no one else had it,just change the style,too many teams using blue now. Blood red or dark maroon would have been a better choice that blue.Without a picture of a ray in the logo it leads one to think they were named after a man named Ray or a sun beam.

The new version looks really boring. The current green is pretty good actually. I guess they dropped the word “Devil” because of religious based complaints, which is really a bummer. The New Jersey Devils received some complaints about their name but they held fast and the complainers crawled back under their rocks. Too bad the same thing didn’t happen with Tampa.

i gotta say these new jerseys could be worse then the tampabay lightnings new jerseys. at least they keept there colors! i loved the green and theres nonthing wrong with the jerseys now! and theres nonthing intimadating about the “rays”. the devil is what makes the team awesome! hey at least were going to be in the runing for the post season next year

The total lack of originality and the early leak/sneek peek leads me to believe the D Rays might be trying to gauge the reaction. God, I hope they’re reading these and realize the fans expect something professional and exciting. Not these high school unis. There’s plenty of creative talent in the Bay area…tap it.

They need to incorporate the green back into the uniforms. The blue is making them look like wanna be Yankees… They are awful and lack originality. I am extremely disappointed and will not be purchasing the new style if this is what they stick with.

These uniforms are horrible, they look like the royals uniforms,i understand droping “devil” from the name but change the colors and uniforms too! It looks really boring.Im a yankee fan and the their uniform is pretty boring too because they want to keep tradition,that i understand.The devil rays, excuse me “rays” have probably the best colors and jerseys out there in MLB.

It seems as though the dumbshits in the front office really are trying to ostracize those of us true fans out of going. Our bullpen makes it hard enough to enjoy a game, now they’re seriously going to make us look like a bad Seattle Mariners knockoff? I love the green, I love the name. Why take thsi away from us? Why try and make us look as bad as we play? It’s a shame. I have a hard believing that this dull, generic, out of the ’70’s pajama party era look is what the people wanted. And from I see here, it isn’t. I hope it falls through. I hope more people like me show up to the Trop pissed, with signs, wearing green, if it doesn’t. Just awful.

Dropping the DEVIL from the name because of religous bias has alienated me. Ive been supporting the team since ‘99 ( a year after the inaugrial season)…I watched Boggs homer for 3000…I watched Paul Sorrento hit aBOMB HR…I watched(on TV) as Esteban Yan hit his first HR in his first evervat bat at Shea during interleague….Doesn’t matter any more: they have officially lost me as a fan….Time to dig out my old Mets gear from the closet

These are horrible and our current Logo, Colors, and uniforms are the best in the league!!! Why are we going to make this gigantic mistake to these incredibly dull uniforms. Im a New York Mets transfer fan and I love the colors of the Devil Rays current look. I like to get people excited about Tampa, but I have to say these uniforms are depressing.

I am a Rays fan and I thought last years uniforms were great. Now they change them just because some people say we stink like fish? So now they are trying to get the team name, Rays, away from the fish and to “We are the Rays of Hope.” More like the gays of hope. This is a very sad choice and I hope they change their mind before next season.

Honestly (im a red sox fan so im happy right now considering we just won the Series last night =D) I think that if the ‘Rays’ want to contend, nows the time to do it. Get some good players, maybe even a new Stadium, and if there Going to change the Uni’s from a perfectly fine and original Dark Green, at least change it to Florida colors, gawd..just something different than this crap. This is absolutely horrible! This looks like a logo for some Florida buffet. The only thing that is missing is”try our new salad bar” underneath. This is the result of some executives daughter or son graduating art school and given a job to redue the logo without any skill!!

It’s almost time for the Rays to unveill their new look in like 6 days or something like that….the new logo defenitly sucks, people are right, the logos are gonna get confused with like something else…so it would be wise for the designers to have a sting ray like they do now and keep it around the name just like the logo now….i think the name Rays is just fine, devil rays was just not too appealing, but i would;ve went with “Sting Rays”….the color is fine with me but you gotta add some other color than just blue….and finally i licked the sleeveless shirts, their awsome

When Vince introduced the name Devil Rays, over 90% of the response was negative. The new owners try to placate all the bible-thumpers, and all they hear from you clowns is negativity. And for you dopes suggesting Sting Rays: 1) Devil Rays was adopted because the species is indigenous to the local waters; and 2) “Sting” is too close to “Stink” (which we don’t need to hear). I’m no designer or anything like that, but I really think whoever is in charge on this one should give things another look. What is wrong with this team? They had Lou Pinella and they couldn’t get him the players he needed. With these uniforms and name change it looks like they are trying to appease or market solely to an older crowd. That ain’t no way to put asses in the seats! There is a whole generation that is lost in regards to baseball. That’s the market they should be going after. That will put asses in the seats and get ownership some more money to either hog for themselves or re-invest into the team. These uniforms look like something James Garner would wear.

The Devil Rays’ original jerseys were the best. Personally I’m sick of every team being stuck in the rut of having dark, drab uniforms. And when is somebody gonna tell the players that the pants legs are supposed to end right below the knees on a baseball uniform and not dragging the ground like a kid wearing his big brother’s oversized uniform.

I was a walk-on in Spring training of ‘04 but they set me packin’ after I discretely suggested to management that they add orange as a second color to go with the green. You know, colors that provided an instant identity, are unique to MLB, and represented Florida. Go figure.
Management’s decision to approve these awful Padres knock offs is sinful. Now Tampa Bay is among 20 other teams in MLB that claim blue as their team colors.

My Turn! In my opinion, let me first of all, congratulate the Boston Red Sox on winning the World Series. They were super and deserve the victory. However, being a Massachusettes native, my #1 team is the Tampa Bay RAYS as they are now refered to. In my opinion, the elimination of DEVIL makes no difference to me as long as they keep the fish in which these species are sometimes refered to as just rays. From what I understand now, the term RAYS is supposed to represent the rays of the sun and I do not dig this, sorry to say. GO BACK TO THE FISH LOGO, EH? Why is the new owner, or whoever, making this change? Has this got to do with the death of Steve Irwin being killed by the stingray? The ray was not at fault and was just protecting itself. Maybe this is not the reason for the sake of changing the name of the team. but if you ask me, the term RAYS meaning the suns rays is kind of dull. I most certainly hope that they go back to the use of the fish and stick to that. Another story I read was the fact that they are going to alternate the use of the logos, using the fish at one time, and the new logo which is a baseball diamond with the sun casting its rays. HOO BOY! In conclusion, I hope they take a vote on this and bring back the beautiful black ray (fish) logo for keeps always.

Green was great, blue is fine after all we are turning into the Yankers triple A club. Either that or they Keep the TB on the hat and no where else so that when they sell the team they can fit into any market and just buy a few new hats and off they go!!! Either way, stupid move…. new logo ok but the green was classic and unique to the RAYS! Changing the green was STUPID…. just goes to show you you can be good at making money (owners) in some ways but suck at it in others…… I’ll still root for the home team, I just wont buy the shirts and hats like I did before!

I lived in St Pete in the 70’s. Missed it so bad, moved back in 1990. I watched the dome sit there for 5 yrs and when we got the team was thrilled. Loved the name! Loved the original colors. When they changed to green I didn’t like it as well but it was unique as no one else wore green so I got used to it. In 2001 moved to Arizona because of my mom’s health. I love the D Backs but my heart is still in FL. D Backs changed their colors last year to red. Now I’m used to it but it’s hard when your team changes their look. But at least the D Backs still have the snake. TB without the fish is like the Backs without the snake! I don’t like the Ray’s new uniforms. Yes, boring, and they look like the Dodgers, Royals, and everyone else that wears blue. I guess fans don’t have any say in this crap. If we did, we wouldn’t have the Arizona Cardinals!!! They’ll always be St Louis to me. Talk about a wimpy name that doesn’t even fit Arizona, but they haven’t changed it. I think if they changed the name they’d win! And by the way, we have the Sun Devils and nobody here bitches about that. And the logo is a little devil, yes, satan himself! I’m ok with the new name though I prefer Stingrays, because devil rays (or devil fish is what it’s called) IS NOT native to Florida, so Rays is ok……but keep the fish as the logo, not the sun. I liked the fish on the front of the jersey. That looked cool, and the fish on the hat, that was coooollll. No, don’t like the new uniforms!!!!! They’re too blah, and I hate the blue jersey with the white on the side! Navy jersey’s ok, lose the white on the side and put the fish on the front! The original unis were best! However, navy jerseys with orange and yellow instead of light blue and yellow might look cool. I guess as long as they win that’s the most important thing. And they’re tied for 1st right now with the Red Sox, and the D Backs are in 1st also. Hope they can keep winning. But the new look sucks.

Just reading back through all those postings back in Oct and Nov. Now it’s May 2008, Rays are competing with Bosox for first place, Yankees 7.5 games behind. New stadium soon, things are turning around.

My turn again. Being a Massachusetts native (sorry Red Sox) I want to congratulate the New American League Champions, the Tampa Bay Rays. I walk proudly every day wearing my caps of the Devil Rays or Rays. I get funny looks up here from Red Sox fans, but who gives a hoot? I would still like to see the fish logo return. Hi Su Z. Yes, I agree with you on that. I stated this back on January 15, 2008. Now it s time for the BIG test, The World Series. I ll never forget this night as I sit here in my New England home, the temperature in the thirties outside. Tears of joy came onto me as the game ended. Very quiet outside tonite. No cars tooting as they did last year when Boston took the glory. In finishing up here, I would like to see Joe Maddon smile more than he does, but I know he s very happy. When one is a Rays fan, who wouldn t be? Right on Rays and beat the Phillies!
