NCAA Tournament First Round: Western Kentucky Beats Drake on Ty Rogers’ Overtime Buzzer-Beater
Western Kentucky and Drake finally gave the NCAA Tournament what it so sorely needed - an overtime thriller.
The game looked like anything but a nailbiter at the 8:16 mark of the second half, when Tyrone Brazelton hit a two to give Western Kentucky a 74-59 lead. But Drake still had plenty of fight left. Jonathan Cox led the Drake charge with his three-point shooting, including the tying bomb with 35 seconds left.
It remained 88-88 at the end of regulation. In overtime, Drake’s Josh Young canned a pair of threes, but was matched by Brazelton, who made his own 3 with 1:12 left to pull the game even at 96.
WKU took a 98-97 lead on two Boris Siakam free throws. Then, with under 20 seconds left, Drake’s Adam Emmenecker drove it to the basket and shot, and his miss touched off a wild scramble for the ball that ended with a foul call against Brazelton. This put Jonathan Cox at the line for 2 with 5.7 remaining. Cox made both, giving Drake a 99-98 lead.
WKU put the ball in Brazelton’s hands. He drove the length of the court, then dished to Ty Rogers who canned a three with time expiring, giving WKU an exhilarating 101-99 win.
Brazelton scored a career-high 33. Western Kentucky will next face the winner of UCONN-San Diego.
