Bengals’ David Pollack Will Retire
After missing most of two seasons in the wake of a broken neck, Bengals linebacker David Pollack has elected to retire from the NFL.
The Bengals took Pollack with the 17th overall pick in the 2005 draft. His rookie season got off to a late start after a hold-out, but in 14 games and 5 starts, he managed to amass 4.5 sacks.
His 2006 season was cut short when, in the second game, he broke a vertebra while tackling the Browns’ Rueben Droughns. The injury left him in a brace for three months, but at no time did he experience paralysis. He began rehabbing after that, but a planned return in the 2007 season never materialized.
Bengals coach Marvin Lewis - who’s having a very stressful off-season - spoke about Pollack’s decision.
“He spent some time with me well over a week ago and that’s where it was headed,” Lewis said. “It’s a tough, tough decision for his family … [but] he’s going to have an outstanding life. … We know the quality of the person; he’s got such a bright future in whatever he does.”
