John Smoltz Will Miss the Rest of the Season
Bobby Cox announced yesterday that he planned on using a closer-by-committee situation that included John Smoltz. Now he can scratch Smoltz from his plans, as the 41-year-old will have season-ending shoulder surgery.
Smoltz reportedly awoke to soreness in his shoulder after blowing a save Monday night against the Marlins. He had been on the DL the five previous weeks with an inflamed rotator cuff.
If this should mean the end of Smoltz’s career (and it likely does), he will leave with a 210-147 record, 154 saves and a 3.26 ERA.
