David Beckham’s first year with the L.A. Galaxy was great in publicity terms, but not very productive in the area of wins - a situation Beckham hopes is not repeated in his second season with the MLS franchise.
Beckham, world-wide soccer superstar and massive stud, was present Monday when the Galaxy opened up training camp. When asked what his expectations were for the new season Beckham replied, “To win something.”
And how do the Galaxy go about fulfilling this wish?
“We can’t afford to be in the position we were in, where we ended up chasing it,'’ Beckham said. “That’s not good for the players or for a team. We’ve got to get it right from the first game and carry on right through the season.'’
Beckham knows that his own health is key to the team’s success.
“Hopefully, I’ll stay a lot more fit than I was last year,'’ said Beckham. “I’m just looking forward to this season. It’s a fresh start for us; it’s exciting.'’
The Galaxy begin their new season with a new coach, former AC Milan star Ruud Gullit (coolest…name…ever…). Galaxy owner Alexi Lalas speaks highly of Gullit.
“Ruud brings an ability to deal with players in an equal way and get the most out of them, whether it’s a young draft pick or the most famous player in the world,'’ Lalas said.
I just can’t get past that name, Ruud Gullit. I seriously want to change my name now. I want to call myself “Chuurlish Gizzard.” Maybe I should stick an umlaut in there - be really death-metal.
As for Beckham…let’s face it, guy’s old and broken-down. He’ll be lucky to play half the Galaxy’s games this year. Plus, at some point, the novelty is going to wear off. Road games aren’t going to sell-out anymore just cause Beckham is coming. The cheese is gonna fall off the cracker, if you know what I’m saying.
